Our
Story
TheDopeExperiment is a band composed of four musicians who live in the Baltimore area with 20+ years of experience performing for local audiences. Original song writing is a key focus of the group borrowing from several genres of music. Improvisational elements of blues, jazz, funk, and jam bands can be heard in a number of the songs. A focus on lyrical content, storytelling, and melodic hooks also give the listener a chance to understand the dynamic between songwriting and musical influence. Forming out of a local group named Puzzle, keyboard player Eric Huckleberry and guitarist Jim Kelly partnered up with bass player Gene Ellis, and drummer B-roll Bruce Bazensky to form The Dope Experiment. Unfortunately Jim Kelly has recently passed away leaving behind an immense amount of knowledge and a desire for perfection in songwriting. Jim was a huge inspiration for Eric to become a better songwriter and musician, also striving as a whole to take music to another level. A love of improvisation and intrigue move the band towards a “what will they do next?” approach when performing live. Studying groups like The Doors, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Phish, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton etc.. gives the band a foundation in rock n’ roll. Lyrical elements can be tied to performers such as Van Morisson, Elton John (Bernie Taupin), Johnny Cash, and more modern contributions from hip hop artists such as Eminem, Black Thought, Slaughterhouse, and Kendrick Lamar to name a few. The album “You Put It Together,” on this page is the first attempt at an EP by the first two members of the group in Puzzle. We will be updating the page with new music from The Dope Experiment as we start this journey. Stay tuned for show dates, videos, etc..
